wcec has secured many prestigious awards for designing complex, mixed-use schemes across the UK. We specialise in transforming decaying, neglected sites into vibrant destinations which provide a sustainable future for local communities.
This prestigious £39 million mixed retail, leisure and office scheme has transformed the eight-acre, disused Britannia Iron Works site.
The buildings on the historic industrial site were all Grade Two Listed and the wcec design has sensitively reused the majority of these along with a range of complimentary new buildings and structures.
wcec worked closely with English Heritage to create a design solution which makes the best use of the unique buildings that remain of the Marshall's factory and, not only seeks to renovate and conserve these, but also to bring them right into the public realm within a high quality, retail-led mixed used courtyard.
This provides a viable and sustainable solution for the long-term retention of these important historic buildings which are central to the industrial and architectural heritage of Gainsborough.
Marshall's Yard opened its doors to the public in 2007 and has won a number of prestigious awards including the British Council of Shopping Centres Gold award for In Town Development, the RTPI East Midlands award for Regeneration and East Midlands Development Agency Regeneration Project of the Year Award.
"Marshall's Yard is an excellent example of a town centre regeneration scheme that has created a quality development involving the use of many listed buildings, adjacent to other sympathetically designed retail units. National and local retailers are housed in units of different sizes in a beautiful courtyard setting, with superb attention to detail throughout the scheme."

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties said: "We have worked with wcec on many successful retail and mixed use schemes across Yorkshire and Lancashire in recent years".
"The Marshalls Yard development is one of the biggest and most challenging schemes we have worked together on and the architectural team has come up with a great design which has certainly put Gainsborough back on the map."
