WCEC Architects long awaited £25 million redevelopment project to modernise the Swan centre in the Chapel Street area of Rugby has now completed on site following an 18 month construction programme.

The scheme which is comprised of a 80,000 sq ft Asda store with a basement car park together with 16 additional retail and restaurant units has been planned to give a traditional street scene feel. It incorporates a blend of modern and traditional designs in keeping with the existing architecture of Rugby Town Centre.

The project creates new linkages through the area with a landscaped pedestrian mall connecting the Swan Centre with the existing library and to the Clock Tower retail centre.

WCEC implemented the design which included the demolition of a derelict 1930s Co-op, archaeological investigations and the retention of a listed pub front.

The new Asda store opened to the public on June 22nd while the remaining units in the Swan centre, including a large Co-op home electrical store, are due to open later this year.

Project leader Richard Hague said “The opening of the new Swan Centre is extremely positive news for Rugby, the quality of the design will enhance shopping experience in the town centre attracting even more shoppers and that should have a good knock-on effect for other businesses in the vicinity.”
