wcec’s plans for a £46 million redevelopment of Stocksbridge district centre have won the approval of Sheffield planners. The innovative scheme on the site of a former steelworks, incorporates existing buildings where possible, preserving Stocksbridge’s rich industrial heritage.
The proposals include a 63,000 sq ft foodstore, 87,300 sq ft of non food retail space, 47,500 sq ft of office space, restaurants and cafés, with a new public square and fountain at the heart of the development.
A run of smaller retail units will link the new development to the existing town centre and a new 635 parking space town centre car park will be created.
The plans have been designed to encourage residents to shop locally. Despite a growing catchment, Stocksbridge is underserved by its retail provision which results in the local economy losing millions of pounds a year as residents go elsewhere to do their shopping.
Consultation with the local community has found widespread support, with feedback from the public helping to shape the submitted plans.
wcec architects has worked with Dransfield Properties, Gallagher Estates, Corus and Outokumpu on the plans which it is estimated will bring 900 jobs to the town.
The application now has to be considered by The Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber before a planning certificate can be issued.
Gavin Ward, Partner at wcec said: "This project has been well considered in both layout terms and architectural merit. It will help bring vital investment back into the area and breathe new life into Stocksbridge. We anticipate that work will begin on the site by 2010/2011".
