Plans have been submitted for a £46 million redevelopment of Stocksbridge district centre on the outskirts of
Designed by WCEC Architects, the proposals include a 60,000 sq ft foodstore, 90,000 sq ft of non food retail space, 33,000 sq ft of office space and a leisure club
At the heart of the development will be a new public square with fountain. A run of small retail units will link the new development to the existing town centre and 500 parking spaces will be created.
On the site of a former steelworks, the design incorporates many existing buildings, preserving Stocksbridge’s rich industrial heritage.
The plans have been designed to encourage residents to shop locally, Despite a growing catchment, Stocksbridge is underserved by its retail provision which results in the local economy losing millions of pounds a year as residents go elsewhere to do their shopping.
WCEC Architects is working with Dransfield Properties, Gallagher Estates, Corus and Outokumpu on the plans.
Consultation with the local community has found widespread support, with feedback from the public helping to shape the submitted plans.
Alex Wall, partner at WCEC said: “This project will breathe new life into Stocksbridge while preserving the heritage of the industry which was once the major employer in the town.”
