Plans have been approved to transform an unoccupied brownfield site on the border of Sheffield and Rotherham into a 13,000 sq m hotel and leisure development which will create up to 150 local jobs.

The site, which is adjacent to junction 34 on the M1 viaduct, will be accessed via Meadowbank Road, and is set to be home to a 60 bedroom hotel, a public house/restaurant and a leisure unit, which could house a bowling alley with bingo above.

This £6 million regeneration scheme has been designed to take advantage of its visibility from the M1, featuring prominent buildings which not only promote the development but enhance the wider area.

The site is already  well screened by landscaping which will be retained to provide a pleasant environmental setting for the development and additional landscaping and planting will be introduced throughout the development to enhance the existing environment.

WCEC is  working in partnership with London development company Stankerr on the proposals.

Alex Wall, Partner at WCEC Architects said:  “This is a fantastic opportunity to develop a prominent brownfield site which has excellent access and visibility from the M1.  The proposals will offer leisure facilities which will be used by the local and wider community, with high quality spaces for public use, including seating areas and play areas.

“We believe that the proposals will make a valuable addition to this site and act as a catalyst for further investment and redevelopment in the area.”
