WCEC Architects have won a prestigious commission as main delivery architects for the £20 million development to extend and improve the Cornbow Shopping Centre in Halesowen. The contract has been awarded to the practice as a result of its proven ability to design and detail iconic buildings in a cost effective and rational manner.
The development which is being undertaken by construction company Bowmer & Kirkland for Vale Retail will see a new 72,500 sq ft Asda anchor store on 2 levels, together with a 4 level multi-storey car park above this. The existing shopping mall facilities will be upgraded in conjunction with the new Asda store.
The scheme features curving rendered vertical circulation cores with elevations broken up by rain-screen cladding, architectural steel framing, and areas of mesh panelling providing an exciting and dynamic overall effect.
We are also co-ordinating with other phases of development including a new transport interchange to form the overall redevelopment of Halesowen town centre. The whole scheme is on a tight constrained site so a meticulous phasing plan has been implemented to ensure that the development is undertaken in a safe manner and in a way which will minimise disruption to the existing shopping mall.
The project is being carefully managed to ensure that the centre operates during the works which are due for completion for Christmas trading 2008.
Alex Wall, WCEC Partner said: We are delighted to have won this commission. The landmark piece of design signals confidence in future retail prospects in the centre of Halesowen. It features strong branding and brings a new identity to the building.
