WCEC Architects design for a new £40 million district centre for Openshaw has won approval from Manchester City Council.
The striking modern architecture of their design will herald a new future for this area of East Manchester.
The new district centre will create a covered shopping mall with a large food store and further retail units. There will be office accommodation and a leisure and fitness centre. It is anticipated that the project will create up to 750 new jobs.
The design follows wide local consultation and public meetings to ensure that the new centre would fit into its setting and achieve its aim of helping to revitalise this part of Manchester.
The regeneration of this area started with the Commonwealth games in 2002 and received a further recent boost with the announcement that the first Super Casino is to be built in the area. Already 3000 new homes have been built and a further 6000 are planned.
The new district centre which is being developed by Dransfield Property Ltd in close partnership with Manchester City Council and New East Manchester Ltd an urban regeneration company, again indicates the desire for both the public and private sector to work together to deliver this exciting development.
This project follows on from Dransfield Properties Ltd earlier investment in the area, with a £10 million retail and office development on Ashton Old Road in 2004. This was also designed by WCEC Architects.
The scheme has been planned to be as sustainable as possible and it is anticipated that it will achieve the highest excellent BREEAM rating. (BREEAM is a tool that allows the owners, users and designers of buildings to review and improve environmental performance throughout the life of a building.)
