40 years in Commercial Architecture
The prestigious 34 million pound redevelopment of Gainsborough town centre designed by award winning architects WCEC, started on site on 3rd January 2006 and is due for completion in spring 2007.
This exciting town centre regeneration project consists of the conversion of the old Britannia Iron Works into a modern mixed-use courtyard with bars, cafés, leisure outlets, shops and offices. This is to be named Marshalls Yard.
Britannia Works was once the largest employer in Gainsborough and at its height exported agricultural machinery throughout the world. The existing buildings have been derelict for many years.
These Grade II listed buildings are historically important and occupy a prominent location on the main road through Gainsborough. WCEC has been working closely with English Heritage and West Lindsey District Council to create a design solution which makes the best use of the unique buildings that remain of the Marshalls factory and, not only seeks to renovate and conserve these, but also to bring them right into the public realm.
This design provides a viable and sustainable solution for the long-term retention of these important historic buildings, which are central to the industrial and architectural heritage of Gainsborough.
The development links into the adjacent town centre and will once again make this site central to civic life in Gainsborough. It will incorporate a high quality public square at the heart of the scheme with exceptional landscaping, fountains and seating areas around the bars and restaurants.
Alex Wall, WCEC Partner said, the proposals have been developed in close consultation with English Heritage, to create a sympathetic re-use of the existing buildings, complemented by the insertion of modern elements. There are dramatic new entrance features linking the Marshalls yard development to the town centre and the adjacent superstore.
