wcec winner of winners
wcec's iconic new market building at Penistone has swept the boards at the South Yorkshire and Humber LABC Building Excellence Awards to become Winner of the "Best Community Project Award". The Ł1m Green Oak Frame building has also been named overall winner from all the classes to be awarded the "Winner of Winners" Award, against fierce competition from the Ł15m Sheffield Crucible Theatre Refurbishment Project and the Ł18m Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience Building, also in this category.
The retail market opened in late February 2011 and has been designed by wcec to fully integrate with the Town Centre, built using historic methods with traditional materials to complement the surroundings and the conservation area in which it sits. It is the largest Oak Framed building in the country.
The project was designed with close discussion with the Local Planning Authority, to provide a scheme which would be suitable for many public uses including the local retail market and also achieve a high quality landmark building for Penistone. They are also delighted with the win.
As winners of the Regional Competition, the Market Hall will now go forward to the National Finals due to be held in London later this year.
wcec Designer Dan Cocker said: "Our design objective for this scheme was to create a new visual and physical reconnection to the Town Centre, by using traditional methods of construction and craftsman skills. This latest intervention will help create new opportunities for small businesses in a building which is reflective of the past".
